  1. Award nominations are due post-dated by September 1 of each calendar year. 
  2. Nominations should be mailed to: VGIA Awards Program, PO Box 15888, Chesapeake, VA 23328.
  3. Award winner announcements will be made during the opening ceremonies of the Annual Conference, currently held in October of each calendar year.  Awards will be presented and the winners will be formally honored at that time.  Official announcements will be placed on the VGIA website immediately following the annual conference.
  4. Nominations may be made by any component within those agencies or departments assigned to or in support of gang enforcement, prevention and/or intervention.
  5. There is no limit on the number of submissions allowed.
  6. You do not have to be a member of VGIA to be nominated for an award unless specifically stated in the individual awards criteria.
  7. A nomination packet must include a completed copy of the submission form and a narrative must be included.  The narrative must address the award selection criteria and describe the specific accomplishments of the nominee. 
  8. Items submitted for nomination become the property of VGIA, which may be reproduced and distributed as appropriate.
  9. The Awards Board, which is independent of the Board of Directors, evaluates the nominations and selects the winners.  Decisions of the Awards Board, whose deliberations are independent and private, are final. At the discretion of the Awards Board, there may be more than one winner in each designated category.
  10. Members of the Awards Board will be selected by the President and Board of Directors of VGIA.
  11. Winners need not be present to receive the award.  If the winner is not present, alternative measures will be made for the issuing of the award.
  12. Award categories are:
    • VGIA Board Member of the Year
    • VGIA Regional Director of the Year
    • Gang Investigator/Officer of the Year – Local, State, Federal  
    • Community Corrections/Programs Gang Officer of the Year
    • Institutional/Residential Corrections Gang Officer of the Year
    • Gang Prosecutor of the Year
  
Individual Awards Criteria
  
VGIA Board Member of the Year
The VGIA Awards Program presents the non-monetary VGIA Board Member of the Year award in recognition of a Board Member who has shown exceptional individual dedication to the Association, the Board of Directors and/or the President in support of the overall mission of the VGIA during the award period.

The criteria considered include, but is not limited to, the following:

    • Is currently serving as a Board Member of VGIA
    • Is a member of VGIA
    • Exceptional performance as a member of VGIA
    • Shows support of the Association’s mission, goals and objectives
    • Involvement in the Association to further and promote the gang enforcement, prevention and/or intervention profession
   
VGIA Regional Director of the Year:

The VGIA Awards Program presents the non-monetary VGIA Regional Director of the Year award in recognition of a Regional Director who has shown exceptional individual dedication to the Association, the Board of Directors and/or the President in support of the overall mission of the VGIA during the award period. 

The criteria considered include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Is currently serving as a Regional Director of VGIA
    • Is a member of VGIA
    • Exceptional performance as a member of VGIA
    • Shows support of the Association’s mission, goals and objectives
    • Involvement in the Association to further and promote the gang enforcement, prevention and/or intervention profession

  

Gang Investigator/Officer of the Year – Local, State, Federal

The VGIA Awards Program presents the non-monetary Gang Investigator/Officer of the Year Local, State, Federal award in recognition of outstanding individual accomplishments during the award period. 

The criteria considered include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Evidence of individual ability to investigate gang activity
    • Demonstration of knowledge in the area of gang investigations
    • Innovative and creative use of resources to effectively combat gang activity
    • Is employed by any local, state or federal law enforcement agency

  

Community Corrections/Programs Gang Officer of the Year
The VGIA Awards Program presents the non-monetary Community Corrections/Programs Gang Officer of the Year award in recognition of outstanding individual accomplishments during the award period.
The criteria considered include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Demonstration of knowledge in the area of juvenile or adult gang members and their activities
    • Evidence of individual ability to reduce and/or effectively monitor gang activity of offenders on community supervision
    • Innovative and creative use of resources to combat gang activity
    • Is employed by any Department of Juvenile Justice or Department of Corrections agency or their equivalent primarily in the areas of non-institutional, community based probation, parole or equivalent services

  

Institutional/Residential Corrections Gang Officer of the Year

The VGIA Awards Program presents the non-monetary Institutional/Residential Corrections Gang Officer of the Year award in recognition of outstanding individual accomplishments during the award period.
The criteria considered include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Demonstration of knowledge in the area of juvenile or adult gang members and their activities
    • Evidence of individual ability to reduce and/or effectively monitor facility gang activity
    • Innovative and creative use of resources to combat gang activity
    • Is employed by any Department of Juvenile Justice or Department of Corrections agency or their equivalent primarily in the areas of corrections officers, counselors and/or gang management/security threat group units at the institution level
  

Gang Prosecutor of the Year

The VGIA Awards Program presents the non-monetary Gang Prosecutor of the Year award in recognition of outstanding individual accomplishments during the award period. 

The criteria considered include, but is not limited to, the following:

    • Evidence of individual ability to prosecute gang members and gang crimes
    • Demonstration of knowledge in the area of gang laws, investigations and activities
    • Innovative and creative use of resources to effectively combat gang activity
    • Is employed by any local, state or federal prosecutorial agency
